As it happens, I was on IRC with the author when I saw your message. He's
looking into another, possibly, Perl 5.6 related issue already reported:

It looks like you may have the same issue. It sounds like he'll have a fix
shortly. In the meantime, if you want to look at another library:

pyspf has been tested as far back as Python 2.2. pyspf 2.0.2 works with
Python 2.3. A one line fix for Python 2.2 compatibility was needed and can
be pulled from the head of the pyspf 2.0 branch on CVS if you are interested:
