If the list was set up properly, you would have received a message from

It would be _proper_ to invite bug reports to an address, reject the first
message from bug reporters to that address, and require every reporter to
subscribe to a (potentially busy) mailing list? Do you really mean that?
It wouldn't be proper to invite bug reports to a mailing list...
If the bug reports went to a distribution list of developers, then I'd
expect the *developers* to know that in *that particular instance* they
should send replies back to the original sender. A bug report list is NOT
the same as a mailing list discussing email protocols, it's quite different.
(FWIW, this is one of the main reasons I prefer 'closed' mailing lists to
have the reply-to header changed to the list email address, then a simple
'reply' will always go to the appropriate person - in the case of the bug
report list (if it was a list), then the reply-to header would not have
been changed, so the 'reply' would go to the original author. If the people
running a closed mailing list want 'reply-to-all' to go back to the
original author as well, they could change the 'reply-to' to go to the
list, and make a 'cc' for the original author))
I can't think of any logical, legitimate, reason why anyone would want to
post to 'ietf-822(_at_)imc(_dot_)org' unless they were a member of the list - that'd
be like shouting across a room and interrupting someone else's
conversation, then running away.
