How do you pass an error back to sendmail from the .forward file? Several

You can do this with Exim. The default configuration doesn't run .forward
files when verifying deliverability of an address, but it's easy to change
this. However the .forward file must be readable by the unprivileged exim
user and must not try to do anything that requires it to be run with the
user's privilege (e.g. writing to a log file).
