Those same DNS providers probably don't support TXT records (and
certainly won't support SPF records).

That's true. Do most DNS servers support this easily, and are the
admins who would need it aware? Probably, but I don't actually know.
Anything that hinders deployment needs to be considered for benefit
and lack of alternatives.
In my experience (we were the first company with a commercial MTA to
implement Caller ID), no customer who talked to me has ever had a
problem with the prefix. The TXT record was a more common problem.
