accepting communication from people you don't already know.

That is the top cause, but remember there are two forms of acceptance:

    SMTP acceptance
    USER acceptance

Yuns choose to ignore the issues surrounding SMTP anonymous sender
acceptance. That isn't a social problem. Thats a technical issue.  Well,
maybe it is a social problem - an IETF social problem because isn't
certainly a user social problem or how did Keith put it? 'User desire" that
the SMTP process is a playing blind mute!
