The fact that 2/3 of TLDs that list an MX are publishing broken data is a
possibly relevant point as well.  That certainly speaks to ICANN's
"requirement" that only certain record types will be permitted - it certainly
looks like there's a high probability that (a) the new TLDs will publish
violating RR types and (b) won't bother checking that they're even "right".

All of the existing TLD MX records are in ccTLDs, over which, as I
assume you are aware, ICANN has no control at all.  The new TLDs
have a long complicated contract, and a verification process.  I
know the guy managing the verification, and I can assure you that
if there are funky MX records, they'll notice them.
