What is technically incorrect about merging two namespaces will cause
operational problems for some people? RFC 1535 is all about unexpected
consequences of a entered name reaching the wrong destination. Merging
multiple syntactically identical namespaces will result in the sorts of
problems reported in RFC 1535 for some people.

Mark, I don't understand what you're asking. All I'm saying is that if ICANN is relying on technical arguments to push back against pressure from corporate entities to loosen their restrictions on dotless domains, then it weakens their position when their technical arguments are incorrect. (And claiming that SMTP forbids dotless domains is incorrect.)
