This comes up all the time, on this and many other lists.  There is no
good solution to the problem because many people who read and participate
are not subscribed to the list.

HAH, I don't blame them for not subscribing. This list gets so much 
spam, that I for one am about to unsubscribe because of it, and join
those off-list readers.

I guess the list policy is that if you can't take your spam, 
then stay off the list. The list will survive quite well without 
any subscribed members. This is clearly proven by usenet. There 
exist several newsgroups with 100% spam content. They don't need
any real content or posts to survive. Most of them don't even
have any readers anymore. Just lots and lots of spam no-one ever
reads. At least I stopped reading unmoderated small newsgroups a 
long time ago. They just turned to 100% spam-lists.
