We have a lot of road warriors as well, but they can still
connect to the
network either via VPN or when that fails via direct dialup
to our network
in several countries.

This is pretty standard since if you are on the road you just have to have
dialup access to corporate HQ and the easiest way to do this is to route all
corporate traffic over a VPN.

Most enterprises use either Exchange or Notes which are rather more than
just a mail client, they are integrated calendar etc. programs. You don't
just want email via POP3.

If mail is internal you want it encrypted. That tends to be where the most
sensitive mails are sent.
