This is pretty standard since if you are on the road you just have to have
dialup access to corporate HQ and the easiest way to do this is to route all
corporate traffic over a VPN.

Sorry, not always possible to get to the corporate networks from some of 
the places that these people are operating.  Some of these places have 
very limited batch capability to send mail.  Of course they could get a 
local guest account and send using one of these guest accounts but then 
this is a significant change in the way they are currently doing 
business.

It can be worked around but then again it's a lot better to get these 
large entities to want to work around this problem.  You are not going to 
force them to go much of anything.


Most enterprises use either Exchange or Notes which are rather more than
just a mail client, they are integrated calendar etc. programs. You don't
just want email via POP3.

If mail is internal you want it encrypted. That tends to be where the most
sensitive mails are sent.
