Sending death threats or committing fraud are already illegal. A couple of
folks down in Florida (IIRC) were sent to the federal penitentiary for
advertising low home rates via email but not delivering.
Unsolicited commercial email is illegal in my home state of Washington, and
in several other states. The Federal Government would like to make its own
anti-spam law, but they said we need something like SPF first. Microsoft
recently won a case against a spammer for nearly $4 million!
If you aren't aware, recently, a whole mess of 419 scammers in several
different countries were the victims of an international sting operation.
Did we get them all? No. Did we raise the cost of doing a 419 scam?
Significantly. Now they are turning to outright death threats, which is
even more serious. If one of these ends up in a government official's
inbox, the military will be dispatched. Can you imagine what will happen if
a head of state gets one of these? Assassination attempts against heads of
state is an act of war.
The Nigerian government also does their part in rounding these thugs up. The
'419' in the 419 scam refers to the section of code in the Nigerian code
that they are violating.
There are plenty of laws we can catch these guys with now. There will be
more in the future.
