There is no legit reason AFAICT for not relaying through your ISP.
I can think of several: Your ESP is not your ISP, and you wish to use
your
ESP's SMTP servers for performance/security/other reasons.
You are roaming and your ISP is restrictive or you have performance or
privacy
concerns with it's service.
When your ISP's SMTP smarthost plain sucks - times out, takes an
unacceptable
time to deliver messages or is just plain unreliable, you might want to
use an
alternative service. Changing ISP may not always be easy, changing ESP -
in theory - should be more so.
