Well, it's not the listserver, or my mail server - the above line
wasn't escaped as received by me.  So, I humbly submit that it is
something at Ruud's mailserver.  As if it really matters.

nah, your software is probably restripping the > out.  

I don't think so. I used mutt on both my own server and that of my ISP 
(yes, my ISP includes shell-access). I sent test-messages, one to myself 
locally and one via my ISP. When browsing the message on my ISP's server, 
there were no escapes.
