As it turns one of my dns servers wasn't even running.  Very, very bad. 
Nagios is only as useful as its configuration.

Since both DNS servers feed from the same cluster of ldap servers they
should always be in sync.  Changes to the ldap database are instantly
reflected in the queries.  No zone file parsing hassles, no server
restart/reloads. Ldapdns converts each dns query to a ldap query, and
its still faster than bind. (Even beats tinydns in some situations)  I
like it.
