After giving the matter a lot of thought over the years, I've come to the
conclusion that auto-responders are just a bad idea in general. There doesn't
seem to be any way to design them so they won't cause problems, though you can
minimize the odds. If you get it wrong, you can create nasty mail loops or
tick off a lot of people, making yourself a bad Internet citizen.
These days I don't even use auto-response vacation messages. It's just not
worth the trouble/risk.
