Don't forget:

1. Campaigning/discussion time between the end of nominations
and the beginning of elections, and

2. Making the vote period long enough, at least covering a full
weekend. (This is implied in your suggested timeline only
if there is no discussion period.)

Both things impacted me during the domain name voting:

1. As it's not really appropriate to debate about a vote during
nominations, (sort of like arguing/debating during brainstorming
sessions), I just ignored the premature comments that came up
before the discussion period, tried not to participate myself,
and just waited for that proper discussion period to begin
before listening to then-timely discussions and putting forward
my arguments as to why my pet name was the absolute best one,
ould be perfect for the spf project, and would bring about
    world peace. :-)

But voting began before there was any discussion period. Oops!

I should have noticed the lack of a discussion period beforehand,
as the times were well-publicized. (And I should have noticed it
in time to have one added in.) Hence my request for one this time. :-)

2. Work was very busy for me during the week of voting, so I figured
I'd figure out the order of my preferences during the weekend
of the week of voting. No time to contemplate everything beforehand.
(I had been expecting a discussion period, so I hadn't figured my
    preferences yet.)

And oops, the voting closed before the weekend. It was something
    like a start-on-Monday, close-on-Friday thing.

Again--it was all well-publicized, so I can't blame anyone but
myself, but I'd still ask for votes to go over a weekend next time.
